What Is Psyllium Husk? What It Does and How to Take It

If you've looked at the label of almost any fibre supplement in Australia, you've probably seen psyllium husk. It's in the big-name powders, the supermarket own brands and, yes, in YAAY.

It's one of the most widely used fibre supplements around, but most people couldn't tell you what it actually is. Here's the plain-English version: what it is, what it does in your gut, and how to take it so it works for you.

What is psyllium husk?

Psyllium husk is the outer coating of the seed of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mostly in India. The husk is separated from the seed and ground down, and that's what ends up in fibre supplements. You'll sometimes see it called ispaghula husk, which is the same thing.

It's very high in fibre, and most of that is soluble fibre. That's the part that makes it so useful.

How psyllium husk works in your gut

Soluble fibre soaks up water like a sponge. When psyllium meets water, it swells and forms a soft gel. In your gut, that gel adds bulk and moisture to what's moving through, which helps stools stay soft, formed and easier to pass.

Your body doesn't digest psyllium the way it digests food. It travels through your system doing its job, then passes out with everything else.

What is psyllium husk good for?

Regularity

This is what most people take it for. According to the Better Health Channel, soluble fibre helps stools pass more easily and can help with constipation. Psyllium is one of the most concentrated sources of it you can get.

Topping up your daily fibre

Australian guidelines suggest around 25g of fibre a day for women and 30g for men. Most of that should come from food: wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. A psyllium supplement is an easy way to cover the gap on days your diet falls short.

Cholesterol

There's good evidence that soluble fibre helps lower LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and psyllium has been studied specifically. A large 2018 analysis of 28 trials, summarised by Harvard Health, found psyllium lowered LDL cholesterol. Those studies used around 10g of psyllium a day, though, which is far more than a typical capsule serve. If cholesterol is your main reason for taking it, talk to your GP about how much is right for you.

Bottoming prep

Regular, well-formed bowel movements make prep simpler and a lot less stressful. That's exactly why we built YAAY around psyllium. If that's why you're here, our guide to Fibre for Bottoming covers how fibre fits into an anal prep routine.

Powder, capsules or tablets?

Psyllium comes in three main forms. All three contain the same fibre. What changes is how you take it.

  • Powder gives you the most fibre per serve, but it has to be stirred into water and drunk quickly, before it thickens. The texture is the reason a lot of people give up on it.

  • Capsules are psyllium powder in a shell. No mixing, no taste, no texture. Just swallow them with a glass of water.

  • Tablets are compressed psyllium. They tend to be denser and harder to swallow than capsules.

The best format is the one you'll keep taking. We've gone into more detail in Fibre Capsules vs Powder.

How to take psyllium husk

  • Take it with plenty of water. Psyllium needs water to work. Most product directions say to take each dose with a 250ml glass of water, and to keep drinking water through the day.

  • Start low and build up. If you're new to fibre supplements, your gut may need a week or two to adjust. Starting with a smaller amount and building up helps avoid bloating or wind early on.

  • Space it from medicines. Bulk fibre can affect how other medicines work, so take psyllium at a different time from any regular medication. Check the label, and ask your pharmacist if you're not sure.

  • Be consistent. Psyllium works best taken daily, not just when things feel off.

If your bowel habits change suddenly, or you're dealing with ongoing constipation or pain, see your GP rather than relying on a supplement.

Psyllium husk in YAAY

Psyllium is the main event in YAAY More Than Fibre Capsules. Each capsule holds 667.8mg of psyllium husk, which is 27% more than a Metamucil capsule, so there are fewer to swallow. If you're weighing the two up, here's how YAAY compares to Metamucil.

Alongside the psyllium, there's aloe vera, and the capsule shell. That's it. No sugar, no sweeteners, no flavours, colours, preservatives or fillers. You can read about why there's aloe vera in YAAY, or see what's inside YAAY in full.

Most people take 3 or 4 capsules a day with a big glass of water, all at once or split across the day. YAAY is vegan, gluten-free, and made in a TGA-licensed facility in Melbourne.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is psyllium husk the same as Metamucil?

Metamucil is a brand, and psyllium husk is its active ingredient. YAAY is also built on psyllium husk, with aloe vera added and 667.8mg of psyllium in each capsule.

Can I take psyllium husk every day?

Psyllium is sold as a daily fibre supplement, and it tends to work best taken consistently. Follow the directions on the label, drink plenty of water, and check with your pharmacist if you take regular medication.

How much water should I drink with psyllium husk?

Take each dose with a full glass of water, around 250ml, and keep your water up through the day. Psyllium needs water to form its gel.

What's the difference between psyllium husk and psyllium powder?

Psyllium powder is usually just ground psyllium husk. Capsules like YAAY contain the same psyllium husk powder, measured out so you don't have to mix anything.

Is psyllium husk good for bottoming?

Psyllium supports regular, well-formed bowel movements, which makes it a natural fit for a prep routine. It's the reason YAAY exists. Our Fibre for Bottoming guide covers the details.
